Created in a limited edition of 1,970 pieces in 2008, the watch is based on the “Alaska II” project which used a “standard” Speedmaster with a modified dial and hands in conjunction with an outer anodized aluminium “thermal shield”.

This Alaska III project was from the 1970s for re-certification as an EVA watch for the Space Shuttle program. In 1978 the Speedmaster got re-certified once more and Omega send 56 pieces to NASA for use during the Space Shuttle program. When Omega began work on the “Alaska III” project, its aim was to adapt the classic Moonwatch to include nonreflective surfaces and a dial that was easier to read than its predecessors’. The resulting watch featured a brushed stainless steel case and large, radial numerals on the subdials. The answer there was simple enough: Omega issued a limited-edition Speedmaster of 1970 pieces, in 2008, that was modeled after the Alaska II Prototype.
